THE EFFECT OF THE APPLICATION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE ON THE  VARIETIES MONASTRELL AND CABERNET FRANC AND OF THE QUALITY OF THEIR FINAL WINES

One of the main problems we face in the vineyards of Fontanals dels Alforins is drought . Being a non-irrigated area, there is a very high dependence on rainfall for the proper development of the vineyard. Taking these conditions into consideration and supported by agronomy knowledge, we have begun to develop a study in the application of a sunscreen for the vineyard.

Made essentially by a disolution of calcium carbonate, the compound forms a layer of crystals which covers leaves and fruits. Due to its ability to modify the nature of light, calcium carbonate will achieve a reduction in leaf and fruit temperature, accomplishing also an increase of photosynthetic quality.  We pretend with this study to mesure the efficacy of the sun lotion hoping that the treatment could considerably relieve the effect of drought.

Once we have finished the comparative study of the red grape varieties Monastrell and Cabernet Franc, we will carry out two microvinifications per variety, in order to create an analysis that allow us to appreciate the effect of calcium carbonate on the final wines.
